Omdia Data: Global Mini LED Backlight LCD TV Shipments Expected to Reach 3 Million Units in 2022
According to Omdia, total global shipments of Mini LED backlit LCD TVs in 2022 are expected to reach 3 million units, lower than the firm's previous forecast. Omdia has also revised downward its shipment outlook for 2023. The primary reason for the downward revision is declining demand in the premium TV segment. Another key factor is increasing competition from WOLED and QD-OLED TVs. Meanwhile, shipments of Mini LED backlit IT displays remain stable, driven largely by their adoption in Apple products.
2022 Mini LED backlit LCD TV shipments: ~3 million units
2023 forecast: Expected to increase to 6 million units
In 2021, Mini LED backlit TV shipments approached 2 million units—four times the volume of 2020. This strong performance encouraged many TV manufacturers, leading them to raise their Mini LED shipment targets for 2022.
However, the final results at the end of 2022 were disappointing. Total Mini LED backlit LCD TV shipments for 2022 are now projected at approximately 3.1 million units. Samsung increased its shipments in this category to over 2 million units. However, TCL and LG Electronics did not see significant growth, and new entrants such as Sony and Hisense achieved only modest increases in Mini LED TV shipments.
The main reason for the lowered forecast is undoubtedly the weakening demand in the premium TV segment. Due to the global economic downturn, sales of premium TVs for many manufacturers suffered significant setbacks. In 2022, OLED TV shipments remained flat at around 7.4 million units, nearly unchanged from 2021. For 2023, Samsung plans to increase its QD-OLED TV shipments, hoping this technology will provide a unique competitive edge. Since Mini LED backlit panels compete directly with OLED panels in the premium TV market—and Samsung has consistently held the largest market share in Mini LED backlit TVs—this strategic shift by Samsung will significantly impact the Mini LED backlit TV market.
Given these factors, Omdia has revised down its Mini LED backlit TV shipment forecasts: the initial projection for 2023 was over 10 million units, but this has now been cut to just 5.7 million units. Shipments are now expected to reach 20 million units by 2026, also lower than the previously projected 26 million units.
Mini LED Backlit IT Display Shipments Remain Stable, Thanks to Apple's Adoption
In 2022, global shipments of Mini LED backlit IT displays are estimated at 15.8 million units, up from 14.3 million units in 2021. Omdia had previously forecast 16.8 million units for 2022. This represents a relatively stable outlook, in contrast to the significant downward revisions seen in the TV segment.
Over 90% of Mini LED backlit IT display shipments are used in Apple products, such as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro models. Apple has been relatively resilient to the impacts of economic recession and global supply chain disruptions. Additionally, Apple's decision to delay the adoption of OLED panels in its product lineup has helped sustain steady demand for Mini LED backlit IT displays.
However, Apple is expected to introduce OLED panels in its iPad lineup in 2024, expanding their use to MacBook models by 2026. As Apple transitions to OLED, demand for Mini LED backlit panels in tablets and laptops may gradually decline.
Note: Mini LED backlighting uses a direct-lit configuration with a two-dimensional array of numerous LEDs larger than 100μm in size, enabling multiple dimming zones.
